The 1967 280SL was a new type of car: one that could be afforded by the upper class, while not treading into the territory of the outrageous super cars of the day. Unlike its predecessor, the famed 300SL, nicknamed gullwing for its door mechanism and unmistakable styling cues, the 280SL featured many of the same characteristics, exuding the sleek body lines and powerful yet delicate class of Mercedes. Available with 182 horsepower, this car was not at all sluggish for its era and directly competed with cars such as the lesser known BMW 2000CS and Porsche 911. described as a styling masterpiece, the 280SL delivered both power and great design to the table, setting the standard for the Mercedes of the future.
